What’s Going on in February in NYC
Even during the shortest month of the year, New York City has a full calendar of exciting events and things to do. For most of them, you don’t even need to leave Midtown Manhattan. In February, cutting-edge designers debut their latest fashions—and the most refined and well-trained dogs compete for one of the most prestigious titles in the world of canine competition. There are festivals to celebrate the Lunar New Year, and cinematic events to honor Saint Valentine. Whether you want to dine out, dress up, or both, these are the five events we’re most looking forward to this February in New York City.
NYC Restaurant Week – Through Feb 9
Have a Michelin-caliber meal without maxing out your credit card during NYC Restaurant Week. Critically acclaimed restaurants participating in the event include ABC Kitchen, Nougatine at Jean Georges, and a number of Daniel Boulud dining destinations across the city (Mediterranean at Boulud Sud, classic French fare at Café Boulud). The winter-iteration of the twice-annual event runs until February 9, so act fast to score reservations. The three course, prix-fixe dinner menu is set at $42, though diners can find an even better deal by tucking in for an exemplary lunch ($29). Photo courtesy of @cesegutierrez.
New York Fashion Week – Feb 8-16
Every February, the biggest names in American fashion debut their fall collections on the runways during New York Fashion Week. While many events are exclusively for elite industry insiders, travelers can experience the artistry and energy of Fashion Week by purchasing tickets to public events. Up-and-coming designers, accessory pop-up parties, and displays of vintage New York fashions are just a few of the ways visitors can participate in this year’s Fashion Week. Just be sure to don your edgiest duds—Fashion Week is one of the best times to get photographed by a street style reporter. More on NYFW here! Photo courtesy of @moeeztali.
Westminster Dog Show – Feb 10-13
For two days, some of the world’s fanciest dogs perform in the prestigious Westminster Dog Show. Tickets for individual events start at $32, making it easy to watch terriers, hounds, and other polished pooches compete for the prestigious title of Best in Show at Madison Square Garden. Related events, like dog writing seminars and the New York Pet Fashion Show ‘Country Couture for Animal Rescue,’ are held throughout the week. Photo courtesy of @westminsterkennelclub.
Valentine’s Day Love Series at Nitehawk – Feb 14
Travelers in town to celebrate Valentine’s Day with their significant other should take a day-trip to Williamsburg, Brooklyn for a traditional dinner-and-a-movie date at Nitehawk Cinema. At this dine-in theater, with a lightbulb-lined exterior, you can enjoy dinner and film-inspired craft cocktails while watching a cult classic romance during their month-long Love series. In addition to timeless love stories like Casablanca and Brokeback Mountain, there are less traditional takes on the theme, too. Think: the Bonnie and Clyde-style True Romance and the silent cinema, Sunrise. Photo courtesy of Nitehawk Cinema.
Chinese New Year Festival – Feb 16-25
It’s the Year of the Dog, and you can celebrate this Lunar New Year with a series of performances and events across the city. Kick off the festivities with afternoon fireworks during the Firecracker Ceremony and Cultural Festival on February 16. On February 25, the Lunar New Year party continues with a parade through the city’s Little Italy and Chinatown neighborhoods. There’s also the relatively new Madison Street to Madison Avenue celebration, which includes face painting and performances, on February 10. Photo courtesy of @davidarizanyc.
