Wines for Thanksgiving

There’s no better way to celebrate the holidays than over a few bottles of wine and some good eats. Chris Billioux, General Manager at Parker & Quinn, reveals his top picks for the best wines to accompany Thanksgiving dinner.

 

For the conversation starter:

Domaine Zind-Humbrecht, Alsace, France 2011; $30+

Foucher-Lebrun “Le Mont” Sancerre, Loire, France 2012; $18+

“I would start with either of these bottles for the main course. They have a roasted sweetness to them that pairs well with our butternut squash soup or delicata squash,” says Billioux.

“Le Mont is citrusy and serves well as a palate cleanser—perfect just before the main entree.”

 

For the main attraction:

Deloach-Forgotten Vines, Zinfandel, Sonoma, California 2010; $42+

Billioux chose a “forgotten” Zinfandel to accompany the main course at Parker & Quinn’s Thanksgiving dinner. The Deloach offers hints of dark berries, chocolate and laurel—the perfect accompaniment for the cranberry relish or cider-brined turkey. “This wine pairs well with a lot of the ingredients,” says Billioux.

 

For a surprise factor:

Chateau Pipeau, Bordeaux, St. Emillion, France, 2011; $45+

This medium-bodied Bordeaux is the most versatile wine for the evening. “It stands well on its own, it’s very balanced, and it tastes different as you make your way through each course,” Billioux says.

 

For the memories:

Dolce Fiore Lambrusco, Lambrusco, Italy; $17+

For a sweet end to Thanksgiving, Billioux suggests Lambrusco, a unique semi-sparkling red wine that pairs perfectly with dessert. This is a hard-to-find bottle, so call in advance to make sure your local wine store carries it.
